Donate Today to Help Children in Foster Care

Our goal is to find safe, loving and permanent families for every child in the DC area and to provide critical support to those youth who are at risk of aging out of foster care without a forever family to call their own.

On any given day in the metropolitan Washington region, nearly 2,000 children are living outside of their birth homes in the care of child welfare agencies due to abuse, neglect and/or abandonment. Almost a third of these children will never return home and instead must wait in foster care for someone to adopt them. Many children, especially teenagers and children with significant special needs, are at highest risk of aging out of foster care without a permanent, loving family to call their own. If children in foster care age out of the system without a family to support them, they are at risk of homelessness, a life of poverty, or becoming involved in the criminal justice system.

COG's Child Welfare Program works on behalf of local governments here in the Washington DC region to find loving homes for these foster children and to provide critical support to those at risk of aging out of foster care. COG partners with NBC4 Washington on Wednesday's Child, a television segment that features children who are waiting in foster care to be adopted. Through Wednesday's Child, over 500 children have been adopted and with your support we can continue to provide this critical service for children who continue to wait for a loving, forever family.

For those youth who have aged out or are at risk of aging out of foster care, COG has launched the Trailblazer Project which provides critical support to students attending college, university or trade school including tuition assistance, living expenses, transportation expenses and other critical needs to improve educational outcomes. Your donation will help these at-risk youth achieve their dreams of attending college.

At the Council of Governments, we will do our part to improve the quality of life for all of our region's young people, and we are reaching out to our partners in the community to join us in this worthy effort. Your support will provide much needed resources for foster and adoptive children and support programs working on their behalf.
